What is Genital Surgery?

A small number of women may feel unhappy with their labia especially if they are asymmetrical, long or slightly bulky. Sometimes, women with large labia can experience pain during intercourse, or feel distress during daily activities or when wearing tight-fitting outfits like trousers or undergarments. Others may feel unattractive or wish to improve their sexual experiences by removing some of the skin that covers the clitoris. Some women are born with large labia, others might develop this with either childbirth or with age. Vaginoplasty UK is the surgical procedure which reduces the size or reshapes the labia minora.

Clients should be aware that this procedure will not make the vagina smaller or tighter. In the vast majority of cases, there is no loss of sensation for you or your partner after the procedure; the procedure will just help you find improved confidence in your relationships and sexuality.

Surgery

The procedure is surgical, taking place in an operating theatre under general anaesthetic, however, in some cases, local anaesthetic with sedation can be used. The whole procedure takes about an hour. The standard procedure is to reduce the size of the inner labia (the inner genital lips), the Surgeon will cut the unwanted labia tissue to get the desired shape. Or, the Surgeon can remove a wedge-shaped piece of the labia, leaving the front unchanged, only removing tissue from behind. This technique means there is no change to the colour of the labia and makes the surgery less noticeable.

Later Progress

You will experience mild discomfort and swelling, which generally disappears completely after 1 week in most cases, however, for a few it might, takes 2 weeks. You might think to take some time off from work to rest and will need to maintain a high standard of hygiene. Labial incisions are rarely noticeable and the sutures used are dissolvable. We advise clients to wear a pad for a week or as required in case of any bleeding. It is important to keep the area clean and avoid sex in the first 6 weeks to avoid any infections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Genital surgery encompasses a number of procedures involved with making the genital area more aesthetically pleasing. For women, this may include reshaping of the labia (labiaplasty), hymen repair, or reshaping of the vaginal canal (vaginoplasty). For men, it may include enhancement or reshaping of the penis. In some cases, it may involve gender reassignment surgery.

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgery normally takes between 1 and 5 hours not including time in recovery.

Yes, all forms of genital surgery are permanent except hymen repair.

Depending on the surgery, we recommend that people take a week or two off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical). Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for about 6 weeks after your surgery. Sometimes, the area may be painful or sore for a few weeks afterwards, this should be considered if your job involves sitting for long periods.

In some cases, certain forms of non-surgical cosmetic procedures may be helpful. You can discuss this fully with one of our friendly advisors or surgeons at your free consultation.

Yes, you can normally combine this procedure with other surgeries. You can discuss this in full at your free consultation.

Whenever skin is cut, nerves are also cut; this may result in altered sensation to the area, particularly at the incision site. All care will be taken to maintain sensation as much as possible.

You should be at a healthy weight for your height when you have surgery as this lowers risks related to anaesthetic. For the best aesthetic results, we recommend that you are at your ideal weight at the time of surgery as further weight loss or gain can change the results of your surgery.

You should check with your surgeon regarding safe timings of air travel following your surgery. Many airlines have their own protocols and you should inform your travel insurance company if you have had recent surgery.

We recommend that in the weeks after surgery, you are close to one of the locations Nu Cosmetic Clinic can refer you to in case you have any concerns, so foreign holidays may be best avoided until a few months after your procedure.

All clients must be at least 18 years of age to have surgery. We do not set an upper age limit for our procedures, suitability for surgery will be discussed at your free consultation with your surgeon.
