What is Breast Reduction (Mammoplasty)?

Women having large breasts face many difficulties. It makes wearing fashionable clothes difficult, makes them prone to back and neck ache and draws unwanted attention many a times. This is where breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can be helpful. This is a surgical procedure with which women can enjoy firmer and smaller breasts that are easier to manage and are more in proportion to the rest of the body. In addition to aesthetic benefits, breast reduction surgery helps in getting rid of psychological problems and medical problems caused by larger breasts.

Why Choose Breast Reduction?

Your emotional and physical well-being may be negatively impacted because of disproportionately large or oversized breasts. Though it’s a personal choice to retain large breasts, some reasons indicate breast reduction surgery is the best way to improve the quality of life.

Chronic Pain

Persistent back, shoulder, or neck pain accompanied by headaches are indicative of problematic large breasts. This pain is largely caused by the excess breast tissue weight that causes strain on your upper body, leading to stiffness, pain, and discomfort.

Difficulty Finding The Right Bra and Clothing

You may consider breast reduction surgery if you continuously face difficulty finding clothing and bras of your size. It can be limiting and frustrating when you can’t find supportive clothing and undergarments that fit you well and feel comfortable.

Posture Related Problem

Surgery for breast reduction may be necessary if it begins to affect your posture. You may have to hunch or slouch forward to alleviate strain on your back. Poor posture can contribute to your physical discomfort and overall appearance.

Skin Rashes and Irritation

Another reason for breast reduction is excessive friction and sweating beneath the breasts. This can further lead to skin chafing, rashes, and irritation. Plus, it can cause severe skin health and comfort problems.

Difficulty in Physical Activities

The size and weight of your large breasts may restrict you from engaging in activities that require speed and movement, like sports or exercise. It can make it difficult for you to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.

Emotional Distress

Emotional distress and psychological factors like loss of confidence and low self-esteem triggered by disproportionately oversized breasts may take a toll on your mental health. In such a situation, the best way forward is breast reduction to improve your quality of life.

Advantages of Breast Reduction

Here are some of the many advantages of breast reduction performed by a skilled surgeon:

Physical Discomfort Alleviation

As the size and weight of the breasts is reduced, you can feel significant improvement in physical comfort and ensure a better posture.

Improved Quality of Life

Breast reduction surgery can improve mobility and self-confidence. It makes it easier for you to engage in physical activities comfortably, leading to a significantly improved quality of life and body image.

Enduring Results

Though ageing, hormonal factors, and pregnancy can result in bodily changes, the majority of the benefits of breast reduction surgery are long-lasting and enduring.

While some changes may occur due to ageing, weight fluctuations, or hormonal factors, the majority of the benefits are enduring.

As every individual is unique, so are their goals and needs. Therefore, it is best to opt for an experienced surgeon who can work closely with patients to provide personalised treatments that prioritise the effectiveness, safety, and satisfaction of the patients.

Breast Reduction Surgeons

The procedure takes between two and four hours and a general anaesthetic is used. During breast reduction surgery, in order to get the desired shape, our breast reduction surgeons cut in an anchor shape, creating a horizontal line underneath the breast and cutting down from the areola. The Surgeon takes away extra fat, skin and breast tissue, and relocates the nipple and areola (the coloured part around the nipple) into the new position.

Later Progress

After the surgery, patients stay at the clinic under examination for another 24 hour. For a week patients have to wear compression bandages. In two weeks’ time patients can resume normal activities. At Nu Cosmetic Clinic, we ensure that you will receive free aftercare for a lifetime from the team of experts we refer you to. Click here to know more about the lifetime aftercare policy.

Recovery & Aftercare

Please note that recovery time for each patient varies. However, here are the general guidelines to adhere to for a smooth recovery after the breast reduction surgery:

Once the procedure is complete, you can expect pain, tightness, and swelling. However, this can be managed with painkillers easily. Usually, the pain subsides after two weeks of surgery. Furthermore, dressings and stitches are removed in 2 weeks, after which your surgeon will advise you on resuming your daily life activities.

Furthermore, here are some aftercare tips to speed up the recovery process:

  • Wear undergarments that support and minimise breast movement and weight. This should be done for at least three months.
  • Make sure to avoid wired bras for three months.
  • Nonetheless, it takes at least 4 to 6 weeks for the patient to experience full recovery.
  • You may start driving after two weeks, but only if you don’t experience pain. However, if you have concerns or recovery issues, consult your surgeon immediately.

Risks & Complications

As with any surgery, there is the small risk of complications with breast reduction surgery. At the time of your consultation, the expert we refer you to will take you through the risks in detail so that you can take an informed decision.

They will not push you for surgery. They will give you all the time and guidance you need to take a decision. They will give you a comprehensive Breast Reduction Patient Guide to take home with you. This will answer most of your queries and concerns. If you have any further questions, you can give them a call and they will provide their expert advice. You will love them for their honesty, integrity and professionalism.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgery normally takes about 2 -4 hours, not including time in recovery.

Yes, the results of breast reduction are permanent. If you gain a substantial amount of weight, or you have a baby, your breasts may become larger, however they will always be smaller than they would have been if you had not had the surgery.

We recommend that people take two weeks off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical). Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for about 6 weeks after your surgery.

No, the only way to substantially reduce the size of your breasts is by surgery.

Yes, you can combine this procedure with other breast or body surgeries. You can discuss this in full at your free consultation.

Whenever skin is cut, nerves are also cut; this may result in altered sensation to the area, particularly at the incision site. All care will be taken to maintain sensation as much as possible.

This is often the very reason women seek breast reduction. At your free consultation, your surgeon will discuss your ideal size you wish your breasts to be and guide you as to what is achievable and the results you should achieve.

You should be at a healthy weight for your height when you have surgery as this lowers risks related to anaesthetic. For the best aesthetic results, we recommend that you are at your ideal weight at the time of surgery as further weight loss or gain can change the results of your surgery.

You should check with your surgeon regarding safe timings of air travel following your surgery. Many airlines have their own protocols and you should inform your travel insurance company if you have had recent surgery.
We recommend that in the weeks after surgery, you are close to one of the locations Nu Cosmetic Clinic can refer you to in case you have any concerns, so foreign holidays may be best avoided until a few months after your procedure.

All clients must be at least 18 years of age to have surgery. We do not set an upper age limit for our procedures, suitability for surgery will be discussed at your free consultation with your surgeon.

Yes, if you are at all unsure about what your surgeon has told you, we will be more than happy to refer you for a second free consultation with another surgeon.

All of the breast reduction surgeons we refer you to are registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and all relevant specialist bodies. Please feel free to ask the surgeon about his experience and qualifications at your consultation; they understand and support that this is vital information to your decision making process.
